As Nigerians celebrate Valentine’s Day, there is a surge in the demand for intimate accessories such as discreet vibrators, handcuffs, bondage gear, lingerie, and cakes, findings by The Explainer show.
Celebrated every February 14, Valentine’s Day is a holiday when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. It is also called St. Valentine’s Day. The holiday has expanded to express affection between relatives and friends, according to Britannica.
Our Correspondent visited some shopping malls in Abuja metropolis and Karu in Nasarawa State, to observe how lovers and retailers are preparing for the day.
Ikenna Chukwudi, a boutique owner, noted an enthusiasm among customers despite the economic challenges in the country.
“This year, we have seen a significant increase in the sale of adult toys. Couples and youths have become more adventurous in their approach to intimacy. They are eager to explore new experiences together,” he said.
Chukwudi also highlighted the popularity of lingerie as another favoured choice among lovers looking to add excitement to their Valentine’s Day celebration.
“Women are opting for various sexy lingerie pieces to ignite passion and surprise their partners,” he added.
Similarly, Mike Victor, an adult store owner in Abuja confirmed the “unprecedented” demand for intimate products in recent weeks.
He said; “Valentine’s season is always a busy time for us, but this year, the demand for adult-themed products has been overwhelming.
“Couples are looking for ways to enhance their intimate moments and create lasting memories together.
“The surge in purchases is not limited to just one category. Adult toys, ranging from discreet vibrators, and handcuffs to more adventurous bondage gear, are flying off the shelves as couples seek to explore new dimensions of pleasure and intimacy.
“People are becoming more open-minded about their sexuality and are eager to experiment with new sensations and experiences,” she said.
The Explainer observed that in addition to intimate apparel, bakers in Lagos are experiencing orders for Valentine’s cakes.
Ojomah Muhammed, a pastry chef, in a chat with The Explainer said wearing lingerie and indulging in delicious cakes are some ways couples express their love and affection during the season.
“It’s heartwarming to see people coming together to celebrate the joy of love in all its forms,” he said.
Meanwhile, Daniel Regha, a popular X critic, has cautioned the youth about the cost of raising a child while they celebrate Valentine’s Day.
“Before lying in bed with any man on Valentine’s Day, young ladies should consider these costly yet necessary baby items.
“As of today, Pampers baby diapers is N13,000, Molfix, N44,800; Softcare gold, N7,600; Angel Premium soft, N15,000; Lebrace, almost N3,800; Huggies, N6,400; Yara, 6,800.
“The prices of baby foods are the worst.
“Remember this before widening your legs open like a TV antenna and getting pregnant on and after Valentine’s Day,” he said
