…Consumers Groan Over Exorbitant Charges, Lack of Compensation For Self-Help Projects
By Abdulwaheed Olayinka Adubi
As Nigerians continue to groan over the high rate of inflation, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company has attributed the excessive tariff being slammed on customers to several factors such as high cost of gas at generation stations and the volatility of the foreign exchange rates.
The Regional Manager of the company Mr. Josepgh Kwaghgba made the disclosure in Makurdi against the backdrop of complaints by electricity consumers, who have complained about excessive electricity charges.
Mr. Kwaghbga explained that notwithstanding the increased costs, there has been a vast improvement in the availability and supply of electricity in the company’s areas of operations.
The Regional Manager therefore, advised those who have invested resources in providing electricity in their areas to follow due process by involving the company in order to enjoy discount.
Electricity consumers who spoke to The Explainer lamented that in the month of November, they have had to pay increased bills 100 percent higher than what they were paying previously. They lamented that with the high cost of living and the inflationary pressures faced by Nigerians, such exorbitant bills were beyond the reach of consumers.
Other electricity consumers in Makurdi metropolis also complained of the Jos DISCO’s penchant for neglecting the investment made by individuals and communities to bring electricity to their neighborhoods.
Residents who spoke to The Explainer decried a situation in which they spent their hard earned monies to procure cables, poles and other services, only to be at the receiving end of crazy bills even without compensation for their investments. A resident of Achusa village, claimed his community procured a transformer and extended electricity to the area after which JEDC moved in to begin charging exorbitant bills, and then cut off power supply from residences it felt were making inadequate payments to their account.
Similarly, a resident of High Level Area in Makurdi, Joseph Gbaa said he lived in a compound that that used to pay N15,000 per month, but same compound has now been slammed with five separate bills amounting to over N200,000 for the month of November.
To prevent the payment of such exorbitant charges, another resident who spoke with The Explainer, Eze Chukwu said he had to do everything possible to get a prepaid meter. He condemned estimated billing as an extortionate and exploitative practice, explaining that he was billed more than N15,000 per month in the past but now hardly exhaust N3,000 with the prepaid meter.
Another respondent told The Explainer that his monthly bill of N15,000 has now increased to N47,000, just as he appealed to JEDC to stop the outrageous billings system. However, one of the consumers, Apalegh Iwen, stated that the current billings were justifiable following improved power supply and general high cost of materials in the country.
