The Explainer Team of Fact Checkers recently investigated a TikTok video making claims about Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s alleged plan to change the country’s currency from the Naira to the Dollar. Our team analyzed the video and conducted research to verify the accuracy of these claims.
The video in question, posted by a TikTok user shows a segment from what appears to be a local TV station, Arise News TV. The video further presents President Tinubu allegedly addressing the public, announcing the intention to abolish the use of the Naira and adopt the Dollar as Nigeria’s currency. The caption accompanying the video reads, “Tinubu latest speech: We are planning to abolish Naira and start using Dollars.”
To verify these claims, The Explainer fact-checkers used some online tools, including Invid and Google reverse image. Firstly, we carefully scrutinized the Arise News website and official Twitter page to search for any news articles or statements related to President Tinubu’s purported plans. Our investigation yielded no evidence of such news or official statements on either platform.
Additionally, we delved into the official social media page of President Tinubu. No information, announcement, or press statement regarding the alleged currency change was found on his verified social media accounts.
Moreover, The Explainer fact-checkers employed advanced video fact-checking technology, including the INVID tool, to analyze the video’s contents. Our analysis confirmed that the video had been manipulated, with a voiceover strategically added to deceive viewers into thinking it was a genuine statement from President Tinubu.
Based on our extensive fact-checking, we can confidently state that the claims made in the TikTok video are false and misleading.
