In a bid to save the City College Road located in Mararaba, Nasarawa State from the imminent threat of erosion, home owners along the axis under the platform of Concerned Residents of Ruga Madaki and Environs (CRORMAE) have started a self help drainage project. The goal of the project is to save the road, a major access route to areas such as Jiwapye, Vintage, Master Key, Becky, Rugan Madaki and Rugan Julie, among others. The area, which has very close proximity to the Abuja city centre has over time emerged as a hotspot for property development with a diverse group of middle class professionals building their homes there.
However, one of the major challenges faced by residents in the area is the absence of proper road infrastructure. The bad state of the roads in the communities around the area has made commuting a nightmare for residents. The latest community self help effort to construct drainage along some bad spots, which are being washed away by erosion, is a last ditch attempt to ensure the access road does not fail completely. The axis being worked on currently spans the Living Faith Church axis to Rugan Juli junction, a total length of about 180 meters. Community leaders in the area are hoping the self help effort to save the road, which is being funded through voluntary contributions, would prod government at both local and the state level to consider this particular road and others in the area for construction.
