President Bola Tinubu will deliver a national address to commemorate Democracy Day on Wednesday.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the broadcast is scheduled for 7 a.m.
“All television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are urged to connect to the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria for the broadcast,” the statement said.
This year, Nigeria marks 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, with June 12 commemorated as Democracy Day.
This date honors the 1993 presidential election, which is widely believed to have been won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, popularly known as MKO.
Considered the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, it was annulled by the military government under General Ibrahim Babangida.
In acknowledgment of the importance of June 12, former President Muhammadu Buhari officially declared it as the new Democracy Day on June 6, 2018.
Buhari also posthumously conferred the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title on MKO Abiola.
