The Transition Monitoring Group has said it is worried by the reported nominations of card-carrying members of the ruling All Progressives Congress into the decision-making structure of the Independent National Electoral Commission at all levels.
It noted that the decision by INEC to appoint such members to the board would influence the process and outcome of the 2023 general elections.
The Chairman, TMG, Auwal Musa (Rafsanjani) in a statement, titled, ‘TMG condemns nominations of party chieftains as INEC/REC Commissioners’, on Saturday noted that the development was worrying, while calling on the National Assembly to reject the confirmation of the chieftains.
“While the provisions of the 1999 Constitution are clear on the compositions, and major appointments into the structure of the electoral body, we are displeased by the apparent partisanship and favouritism reported through the nominations of the party’s card-carrying members as INEC Commissioners and state Resident Electoral Commissioners.
“We call on the National Assembly to reject the confirmation of all nominated party chieftains and insist on transparency and non-partisanship in the selections, to uphold the democratic value and electoral integrity, while proving respect for the sanity and sanctity of the rule of law.”
