An abrupt temporary shutdown of WhatsApp, a social media platform owned by technology company, Meta, on Tuesday morning, fuelled apprehension among users of the service.
Meta is also the owner of Facebook, Instagram and other products and services being used all over the globe. Meta had since confirmed the incident and restore the service.
The Explainer noted that the service outage by WhatssApp led to anxiety on the part of Nigerian users, who either depend on the tool to ply their daily businesses or use same for instant message dissemination. Initially, many had though that the temporary interruption was caused by their network providers, but this was soon to be confirmed otherwise when users complained of not receiving messages and unable to send same within the timeframe of the interruption.
Some Nigerians recalled through Twitter, that the experience of Tuesday morning was not the first time, because it was similar incident last year.
A Twitter user with the handle @iamifeoluwab reacted, “I was wondering because I just suddenly stopped receiving messages and also unable to send out any. It is well.”
This will not be the first time this is happening as another user on Twitter @JenniferRachea2 said, “We suffered same thing last year with WhatsApp,” urging Meta on the need to put in work.
Meta did not respond immediately to the development. But , at about 11:19 am ,the Explainer checks revealed that , the US tech giant had reacted to comments around the world, including Nigeria about its services, by saying it had resolved a major WhatssApp outage that prevented “many of the billions of users’ of its popular service from connecting or sending messages.
Confirming the report, the tech giant says, ”We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatssAp today. We’ve fixed the issue and apologise for any inconveniences,” according to a Meta spokesman who spoke to AFP on the matter.
