Residents of Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State may need to tighten their belts in the days ahead as the local government administration has concluded plans to impose merriment levy on merrymaking activities organised within their respective premises.
This was contained in a statement, signed by the local government administration officer and obtained by The Explainer, which clarified that the levy is not to be borne by the proprietor but the celebrants/organisers.
The statement reads: “Under the provision of Part III Section 13 of the Taxes and Levies approved list for collection, 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended); and Karu Local Government bye-laws which vested constitutional and statutory powers on the Council, regarding Merriment Levy.
“We want to formally bring to your notice that Karu Local Government shall commence the collection of merriment levy on all merrimental activities within your Tenement such as Birthday Parties, End of Year Parties, Wedding Receptions, Cocktail Parties, etc, as provided by the law on 18th November 2022.
“Please note that the levy is not directed to be borne by the proprietor but by the celebrants/organizers.
“Furthermore, for effective and efficient operation, we, therefore, deem it fit to formally notify you for collaboration to enhance the smooth sail of the revenue drive”.
