Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has sacked more than 11,000 of its employees, representing about 13 per cent of the total workforce.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s chief executive, announced the mass layoff in a message to employees, which Meta shared on its Newsroom.
The development comes few days after Twitter, micro-blogging platform, sacked about 50 percent of its staff.
“Today I’m sharing some of the most difficult changes we’ve made in Meta’s history. I’ve decided to reduce the size of our team by about 13% and let more than 11,000 of our talented employees go,” Zuckerberg said.
“We are also taking a number of additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company by cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1.
“I want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted.”
Insecurity: Nigerian Police Deploy 3 Armed Drones
Ojimaojo Yunus, Abuja
The Nigeria Police have acquired and deployed three high-powered Asisguard Songar armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for improved armed surveillance operations to checkmate criminal activities across the country.
Spokesperson for Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, announced the acquisition and deployment of the armed drones in a statement on Wednesday.
According to him, the three newly acquired UAVs are rotary wing air crafts capable of flying up to an altitude of 1000ft with high operational endurance and capacity of firing at acquired threats and targets from reasonable distances.
He said the acquisition of the high-powered UAVs was also a further manifestation of the determination of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, to integrate the use of innovative technology in the law enforcement duties of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Adejobi, the IGP has directed the immediate and strategic deployment of the new drones based on necessity.
He added that three more UAVs of the same specifications are still expected in the shortest possible time.
