Claims of the purported kidnapping of Prof. Cyril Ndifon, a suspended Professor of Law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar, has been making the rounds in recent days.
However, the Cross River State Police have categorically denied these allegations, clarifying that Prof. Ndifon was not abducted but was apprehended by government security agents for questioning. Police spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, emphasized that the rumoured abduction was misinformation intended to incite fear, urging the public to dismiss such reports.

The Explainer Fact Checker examined the matter, considering statements from both the Cross River State Police and the initial conflicting report. SP Irene Ugbo, the police spokesperson, clarified that Prof. Ndifon was not a victim of kidnapping as previously speculated but had been taken into custody by a government security agency for questioning. The police vehemently refuted the alleged abduction, highlighting its potential to sow panic and disrupt the peace within the state.
Contrary to the police’s account, the initial report, provided by Prof. Ndifon’s son, David Ndifon, detailed a harrowing incident where armed assailants invaded their Akpabuyo residence, firing gunshots and forcibly taking the professor away.
This narrative, however, contradicts the official police statement. Crucially, it is essential to acknowledge that Prof. Ndifon was under suspension by the University of Calabar due to allegations of sexual harassment involving students and related issues.
Having looked at all the issues, the Explainer fact-checkers can conclude that the rumoured abduction of Prof. Ndifon is false and misleading.
