Three years after his demise, frontline NGO, the Resource Centre for Human Rights&Civic Education (CHRICED) has paid glowing tributes to the late pioneer Chairman of its Board of Directors, Professor Abubakar Momoh. In a moving remembrance message signed by Executive Director, Comrade Dr. Zikirullahi Ibrahim, the organization extolled the virtues of the late Momoh, describing him as a patriot who fought tirelessly for a better country. The remembrance message reads:
On this day marking three years since his passage, the Resource Centre for Human Rights&Civic Education (CHRICED) remembers its pioneer Board Chairman, Professor Abubakar Momoh. Even as the painful reality of his demise lingers in our hearts, CHRICED as an organisation continues to take solace in his legacy of speaking truth to power, his excellent world class scholarship, and his absolute commitment to social justice. On May 29, 2017, our country lost a patriot, whose forthrightness and irrevocable commitment to the good of society stood him out.
Three years on, the many ills and anomalies, which Professor Momoh used his scholarship and activist exertions to fight against, continue to assail our country. Poverty, illiteracy, corruption among many other manifestations of bad governance continue to hobble the potentials of our great country. If he was still here with us, Professor Momoh would have urged us not to wallow in silence. He would have reminded us of the words of Che Guvera that the first task of the revolutionary is to be educated, and to use that education to emancipate society. This great academic and activist would have urged us to strategically organise to confront these challenges. He would have galvanised us to bluntly speak unvarnished truth to power.
As an organization therefore, CHRICED will continually take inspiration from the ideals of social justice, democratic accountability and inclusiveness, which Professor Momoh exemplified all through his life. CHRICED remains irrevocably committed to working for the realisation of the core principles, and ideals, which defined the life and times of our pioneer Board Chairman. The Board of Directors, Management Committee and Secretariat of CHRICED will not give up the struggle for a Nigeria built on justice, equity and fairness. These are the very ideals Professor Momoh lived for; they are the same things he died fighting to realise. He has passed on the torch to us to work to realise the ideas he espoused and gallantly fought for.
