Protest by students under the umbrella National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) over the prolonged lecturers’ strike, as well as security operatives on standby to maintain order, on Monday, paralyzed activities along the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) road, in Lagos.
In a viral video sighted by The Explainer, the university students who were protesting the seven-month industrial action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Monday morning barricaded a section of one of the roads leading to the MMIA, an vital gateway into Nigeria.
The situation caused gridlock along the axis as the vehicular movement in and out of the airport was stalled.
Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, told Channels Television that police officers have been deployed to the scene.
“Our men are there,” he said in a telephone chat on Monday morning.
NANS, National, Public Relations Officer (PRO), Giwa Temitope, confirmed to reporters that policemen are at the protest scene.
“They are here to protect us. Nobody has been harassed but we are not relenting. No retreat, no surrender,” he said.
The protesting students has last week blocked the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Ibadan-Ife Road, over the impasse.
