Nigerian music sensation, Asake has emerged as the Best African act at the 2024 MOBO Awards, beating a host of other superstars from the continent.
The ‘Lonely at the top’ crooner received the coveted award at the prestigious ceremony held in London on Wednesday night.
He expressed gratitude to his fans and collaborators for their support.
“This is a dream come true for me. I want to thank God, my family, my team, and everyone who has been with me on this journey. I also want to thank all the amazing artists in this category. You are all winners in my eyes,” he said.
Asake was nominated alongside fellow Nigerian artists Adekunle Gold, Davido, Rema, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Wizkid.
Also in the category were South African Tyla, Cameroonian-American Libianca, and eSwatini artist Uncle Waffles.
Asake is known for his fusion of Afro-pop, R&B, and soul music, earning him a loyal fan base across Africa and beyond.
He rose to fame with his hit singles ‘Mr Money’, ‘Don’t Hype Me’, and ‘Gegeti’, which featured Zlatan and Peruzzi.
He released his debut album, ‘Lonely at the top’, in 2023, which received rave reviews from critics and listeners.
Another Nigerian Afro-gospel singer, Limoblaze also clinched the best gospel artist award, edging out other nominees such as CalledOut Music, Mercy Chinwo, and Sinach.
Limoblaze, whose real name is Samuel Onwubiko, is a rapper, singer, and producer. He blends gospel messages with Afrobeat sounds.
He has collaborated with notable artists such as Da’ T.R.U.T.H., Gil Joe, and Nkay.
He released his fourth studio album, ‘Bridges’, in 2020, which featured Grammy-winning singer Lecrae.
Asake and Limoblaze join the likes of 2Face, D’Banj, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy on the list of Nigerians who have won at the MOBO Awards, which celebrate music of black origin.
Meanwhile, British-Nigerian rapper, Tunde bagged the Best New Artist award, while British rapper, Central Cee topped the winners’ chart with two awards: Best Male Act and Song of the Year for ‘Sprinter’ with British-Nigerian rapper, Dave.
Drake and 21 Savage were the joint winners of the Best International Act award while Soul II Soul was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
