Barrister Charles Ebueb, Director General of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has highlighted the growing concern over the spread of disinformation and hate speech in West Africa.
Ebueh also emphasized the concerted efforts being made by regulatory bodies to address these challenges.
Speaking at the second regional conference on countering disinformation and hate speech in West Africa, held in Lagos on Tuesday, Ebuebu underscored the critical role of media regulators in safeguarding public interest and promoting responsible journalism.
The conference, organized by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD West Africa) in collaboration with the National Democratic Institute (NDI), brought together media regulators, practitioners, and experts from across the region under the theme “Countering Disinformation and Hate Speech in West Africa.”
He further emphasized the collective responsibility of media regulators, stating, “As gatekeepers of information, we are collectively responsible for ensuring that our media spaces maintain questions of truth, fairness, and respect.”
The NBC Director General highlighted the commission’s efforts to combat false information and harmful rhetoric, noting, “Our efforts to counter hate speech and disinformation are enshrined in the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, which provides clear guidelines and regulations to safeguard the integrity of our airwaves.”
Recognizing the importance of regional cooperation, Ebuebu mentioned the establishment of the West African Broadcasters Regulatory Authority Network (WABRAN).
He said, “This sub-regional body reflects our commitment to collaborative action in addressing common challenges such as disinformation, fake news, and hate speech.”
Ebuebu praised the conference organizers, saying, “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Center for Democracy and Development and the National Democratic Institute for organizing this timely and impactful conference.”
Calling for meaningful dialogue and lasting partnerships among participants,
“Together, we can oversee a media landscape that not only informs but unites and uplifts our communities.” He said
