Flooding in Jigawa State has claimed 16 lives and forced thousands from their homes, causing widespread destruction.
The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Haruna Mariga, revealed the extent of the disaster in a press briefing on Wednesday.
“In total, the number of households affected by the flooding was 3,936, and the persons who were displaced was 3,834; the number of land hectares washed away by the flood was 2,744, and the total deaths as of Wednesday is 16,” Mariga reported.
The Explainer learned that the floods, which have affected ten local government areas in Jigawa, have been particularly destructive to the region’s agriculture.
Mariga highlighted the significant impact on farming communities, stating, “The impacts of the floods are significant in agricultural practices and livelihoods.”
According to SEMA, the majority of fatalities resulted from the collapse of buildings, primarily mud houses, and boat accidents. “The canoe overload, the building collapse, and the drowning were responsible for the deaths in the flooding,” Mariga explained.
The disaster has not only displaced thousands but also destroyed vast swathes of farmland. With 2,744 hectares of agricultural land submerged, local farmers are facing severe economic hardship.
“Farmers are counting their losses amid efforts to contain the impact of the flood that destroyed their farmlands and crops,” Mariga added.

As the region enters the peak of its rainy season, concerns are mounting that the situation could worsen.
Mariga expressed apprehension about potential further damage to families, livestock, and farmlands in the coming weeks.
In response to the crisis, the Jigawa State government has indicated that it is implementing recommendations from a flood assessment committee established nearly a year ago. These measures include dredging nearby rivers and clearing waterways to improve water flow.
