In a harrowing incident on Sunday night, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, who is loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, reportedly narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. According to a statement released on Monday morning in Port Harcourt, the State capital, the assailants comprised armed thugs and certain policemen, allegedly led by a senior police officer in the State.
The statement, signed by Ehie’s legislative aide, Ken Uchendu, detailed the alleged events that unfolded. It described how, around 11 pm on Sunday, a group of armed thugs and rogue police officers, including Superintendent of Police SP. Irikefe London Owen from the CTU B 3 RSV and CSP Salihu Masalachi, targeted the private residence of Speaker Edison Ogerenye Ehie with the intention to assassinate him and harm his family.

Fortunately, the Speaker’s security details swiftly intervened, engaging the thugs and rogue police officers in a gun battle to repel the attack. Their prompt and decisive action saved the Speaker and his family from harm.

The alleged involvement of policemen in the attack is disconcerting and calls for a thorough investigation to ascertain the truth and bring the perpetrators to justice.
