President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday returned to Abuja after attending the 77th edition of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York.
The President was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport by senior government officials, including his Chief Staff Professor Ibrahim Gambari; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Mohammed Musa Bello; the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman with some other senior military and other intelligence officers.
During his eight-day stay in the United States for the event, President Buhari addressed world leaders on Wednesday, calling for debt cancellation for developing countries and promising a free, fair and credible election in Nigeria, among other issues.

Spotlighting what he described as the burden of unsustainable external debts, President Buhari stressed that it was important for world leaders to take action to ease the burden.
“Nigeria, therefore, implores our global partners to do more to complement our endeavours. Indeed the multi-faceted challenges facing most developing countries have placed the ability to address their fiscal place,” he said.
“This equally calls for the need to address the burden of unsustainable external debts by a global commitment to the expansion and extension of the debt service suspension initiative to countries facing fiscal and liquidity challenges as well as outright cancellation for countries facing the most severe challenges.”
