Maiduguri was struck with tragedy as a destructive fire ravaged the Muna Alamdari Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, resulting in the loss of two lives and the destruction of over 1,000 houses. The fire erupted at approximately 6am and persisted for more than an hour before fire service personnel managed to bring it under control.
In the face of this calamity, the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Barkindo Muhammad, revealed that the affected IDPs, along with the Civilian Joint Task Force, security agencies, and compassionate individuals, rallied together to assist in extinguishing the flames. Their combined efforts played a crucial role in mitigating further damage and saving lives.
Dr Muhammad further disclosed that the agency has promptly initiated an assessment of the extent of the damages while simultaneously focusing on providing immediate humanitarian aid to the affected victims. To alleviate their suffering, the agency is swiftly delivering 500 bags of rice, blankets, and other essential non-food items to offer some relief during this trying time.
The fire incident has dealt a devastating blow to the already vulnerable IDP community in Muna Alamdari, amplifying the need for continued support and proactive measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and concerned individuals are called upon to join forces in providing assistance and resources to help the affected IDPs rebuild their lives and regain their sense of stability.
