The Coalition for Whistleblower Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) strongly condemns the destruction of DAAR Communications’ infrastructure in Port Harcourt by the Rivers state government.
DAAR Communications, the parent company of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and RayPower FM, witnessed the collapse of its mast and building during an operation conducted by state officials and security personnel on Monday.
In response to this incident, the coalition has issued a statement on Thursday, condemning the state government’s actions as a severe violation of the fundamental principles of free speech, press freedom, and the right to freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution.
“The ongoing suppression of media outlets in Nigeria poses a significant threat to the country’s democratic foundation,” the statement asserts.
“We, therefore, urge the Rivers State government to ensure that any regulatory measures taken against media organizations adhere to principles of transparency, fairness, and the rule of law, with a commitment to safeguarding the rights of journalists and media professionals, allowing them to carry out their duties free from intimidation or harassment. ”
We must uphold Nigeria’s dedication to international human rights standards, including the right to freedom of expression and information, as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.”
