The family of late Nigerian singer Ierioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has requested that fans abstain from organizing events to mark the first anniversary of his death.
Monisola Odomuso, a member of the Aloba family’s legal team, issued a statement on Tuesday appealing for privacy as the family continues to grieve.
“It has come to the attention of the Aloba family that some organisations have been planning to celebrate the first anniversary of the death of the late son and singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (Mohbad),” the statement read.
The family cited several reasons for their request, including the fact that Mohbad has not yet been laid to rest.
They encouraged the public to join them in prayer on the anniversary instead of planning elaborate events that might affect their emotions.
The Explainer had reported that Mohbad, 27, died on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that remain unclear.
His sudden death and hasty burial the following day sparked public outrage and calls for investigation.
Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, has been at the forefront of demanding justice for his son. He has rejected the initial autopsy results and announced that the family is conducting an independent examination. In June, a magistrate court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, granted the family’s request for a second autopsy.
The controversy surrounding Mohbad’s death has led to various allegations, including accusations against his former record label boss, Naira Marley, and others in the music industry.

The case has also brought attention to personal matters, with Mr. Aloba recently calling for women who may have borne children for the late singer to come forward.
As the anniversary approaches, the family’s statement also cautioned against using the occasion for commercial purposes.
They emphasized their desire for a solemn, private time of remembrance rather than public celebrations.
