A tragic case of mistaken identity unfolded in Edo State’s Amagba community in Benin City, resulting in the brutal mob killing of two artisans mistaken for armed robbers.
The victims, identified as Osamudiamen Ehigie and Nosa Aghimie, were welders returning from a project site around 6 p.m. on November 16th when they unexpectedly encountered an ongoing robbery.
According to sources, the artisans were initially chased by suspected robbers and sought refuge by hiding in a nearby house. Tragically, local residents who misidentified them as criminals subsequently apprehended and fatally beat them.
Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed the incident, stating, “The command is aware of the incident where two young boys unfortunately met their deaths.”
Yamu added, “The command immediately arrested three suspects, while two other suspects are at large. Those arrested have since been charged to court.”
The Explainer learned the site owner, who arrived later, attempted to plead the artisans’ innocence, but the intervention came too late to save their lives.
