Tobi Amusan, the holder of the world record, has been selected to fly Nigeria’s flag during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
For Nigerian athletics, this nomination represents a major turning point because it is the first time in 20 years that a track and field athlete has been given this award.
“Tobi Amusan has been named as Nigeria’s flagbearer for the opening ceremony of #Paris2024 #Olympics – she becomes the first athlete from Athletics in 20 years, since Mary Onyali at the Athens 2004 Games, to have such honors,” read a Making of Champions tweet on the social media platform X.
Known for her remarkable accomplishments in the 100-meter hurdles, Amusan will head the Nigerian delegation in the opening ceremony’s parade of nations. Amusan’s outstanding accomplishments and her reputation as one of Nigeria’s top athletes abroad are highlighted by this accolade.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee has chosen other important players for the nation’s Olympic squad in addition to Amusan.
The post further stated, “In another appointment, the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) also announced Badminton player, Anuoluwapo Opeyori as the General Team captain for Nigeria in Paris.”
Nigeria’s participation in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was made possible by these appointments.
