President Bola Tinubu will address the nation via a televised broadcast on Sunday, August 4, 2024, according to a statement from the presidency.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, announced that the broadcast will air at 7:00 am.
“Television, radio, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to plug into the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast,” Ngelale stated.
He added, “The broadcast will be repeated on the network services of the NTA and the FRCN at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the same day.”
The announcement comes as protests over bad governance enter their third day across the country. The demonstrations have been marred by deaths, violence, looting, destruction of public and private properties, and allegations of law enforcement brutality.
Amnesty International reports that at least 13 people have been killed by security agents, a claim denied by the police. Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, acknowledged seven fatalities but attributed them to terrorists, local vigilantes, and a reckless driver.
Amid the unrest, calls have grown for President Tinubu to address the nation and respond to protesters’ grievances.
The scheduled broadcast appears to be a response to these demands.
