President Bola Tinubu has issued new directives aimed at reducing government spending by limiting the number of vehicles and security personnel assigned to federal officials, according to a statement released by the presidency.
In a move to curtail excessive government expenditure, the President has restricted Ministers, Ministers of State, and Heads of Federal Agencies to a maximum of three vehicles in their official convoys.
The directive explicitly states that “no additional vehicles will be assigned to them for movement.”
The new mandate also addresses security arrangements, limiting officials to a security detail of five personnel – four police officers and one Department of State Services (DSS) officer. President Tinubu has instructed that “no additional security personnel will be assigned” beyond this allocation.
This latest directive builds upon cost-cutting measures implemented by the President in January 2024, when he reduced his own foreign trip entourage from 50 to 20 officials, while limiting local trips to 25 officials. The Vice President’s delegation was similarly streamlined to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for domestic travel.
According to Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President has further directed the National Security Adviser to engage with Military, Paramilitary and Security Agencies to determine appropriate reductions in their vehicle and security personnel deployment.
The directive emphasizes immediate compliance from all affected officials, highlighting the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and efficient resource allocation in government operations.
