A charitable rice distribution event turned tragic on Saturday in Okija, Anambra State, when a stampede claimed multiple lives during an annual donation drive by the Obijackson Foundation.
The Foundation, established by prominent entrepreneur Ernest Obiejesi (Obijackson), expressed profound grief over the incident that occurred during their yearly rice-sharing initiative meant to support less privileged community members during the Christmas season.
“This tragedy breaks our hearts,” the Foundation said in a statement released Saturday.
“The annual rice-sharing event is a labour of love, aimed at bringing joy and relief to those in need. That it resulted in such sorrow is devastating beyond words.”
While the exact death toll remains unconfirmed, the Foundation acknowledged that the incident “claimed lives and left several families grieving” in the Ihiala Local Government Area community of Nigeria’s South-east region.
The organization extended condolences to Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, bereaved families, and the entire Okija Community.
They also commended security operatives and rescue workers for their rapid response in managing the situation.
Looking ahead, the Foundation pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragedy and implement enhanced safety measures for future events.
“We will learn from this experience and strive to do better,” the statement emphasized.
“Through this challenging moment, the Foundation has reaffirmed its resolve to serve the people, while ensuring its legacy of kindness and compassion do not waver,” the statement continued, noting their commitment to supporting those affected while pursuing their charitable mission “in more controlled and secure ways.”
The Foundation called for community understanding during this period of reflection, stating, “We humbly seek the understanding of our community as we reflect on this painful moment. This setback will not deter us from our mission to serve the vulnerable and uplift those in need.”
