The onslaught of fake news on the raging COVID 19 pandemic in Nigeria has intensified with purveyors of disinformation concocting and circulating unfounded claims on social media. The Explainer Fake News Police on patrol detected the latest in the fake content designed to misinform the public. It is in the form of a text circulating on Whatsapp, claiming that Corona Virus can be cured by consuming boiled garlic.
The fake news message reads “GOOD NEWS!!! Wuhan’s Corona virus can cure itself * by a bowl of freshly boiled garlic water. The old Chinese doctor proved its effectiveness. Many patients have also proven it to be effective, RECIPE: Take eight (8) chopped garlic cloves, add seven (7) cups of water and bring to a boil. Eat and drink the boiled water from the garlic .Improved and cured overnight … Please share with all your contacts can help save lives.” Fact checks by The Explainer detectives based on consultation of various medical authorities put a lie to the claim of garlic being a cure for COVID 19. The Explainer calls on the public to discountenance these claims, and be wary of the fake news at this time of the COVID 19 pandemic.
