Explainer has detected and debunked a fake news item, in the form of a manipulated infograhic making the rounds claiming a case of the dreaded Corona Virus has been recorded in Abuja, the nation’s capital. The claims in this particular item are meant to misinform the public. After several fact checks, The Explainer can authoritatively report that NO case of the dreaded COVID 19 has been recorded in Abuja as at March 19, 2020.
Checks with on the twitter handle of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control @NCDCgov as at March 19, 2020 show no mention of any positive COVID 19 case in Abuja. As would be seen below from the apparently manipulated infographic, the peddlers of the fake news merely edited a graphic similar to the ones usually issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The aim of the peddlers of this fake news is apparently to mislead the public and cause panic.
