A torrential downpour has caused significant damage to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State. The severe weather event led to a substantial breach in the facility’s infrastructure, including its perimeter fence. The situation created an opportunity for 119 inmates to escape from custody.
In response to this incident, the Federal Government is contemplating the relocation of the centre. This consideration is primarily due to the jailbreak, which has raised serious concerns about the facility’s viability in the area it is currently located.

During an on the spot assessment of the correctional centre on Thursday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted the issue of overcrowding at the facility.
He stated, “The centre, initially built to accommodate 250 inmates, currently houses 499.”
This overcrowding issue is a significant concern, especially in light of the recent jailbreak.
The Minister confirmed that out of the 119 escaped inmates, 13 have been re-arrested. This update follows reports that the facility management plans to publish the names and pictures of the escaped inmates.
The Explainer had reported how 119 inmates managed to escape the centre due to the heavy rainfall the previous night. The downpour not only caused severe damage to the facility but also created an opportunity for some of the inmates to flee.
Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the NCoS, Federal Capital Territory Command, said the command is collaborating with other security agencies to recapture the remaining fleeing inmates.
He said, “our database will soon be made known to the public.”
