Desmond Akawor, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, has tendered his resignation from the post.
The decision comes after he was appointed as the Federal Commissioner representing the state at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
In a letter addressed to the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, Akawor expressed his appreciation to the party for giving him the opportunity to lead. He also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for the appointment to the RMAFC.
Akawor’s letter stated, “After consultation with my leaders and family, I have accepted this opportunity to serve our country, which I consider as a national service.
Consequently, I have resigned my position as the Rivers State Party Chairman of our great party – The PDP, and immediately handed over all duties to the Deputy Party Chairman – Hon. Aaron Chukwuemeka, who has commenced action in this stead.”
He further expressed gratitude for the support received during his tenure as the party’s state chairman from 2020 to 2023. Akawor also expressed his utmost appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for considering him worthy to serve in his new capacity. With his resignation, the responsibility of leading the PDP in Rivers State is now assumed by the Deputy Party Chairman, Hon. Aaron Chukwuemeka.
The Explainer understands that Rivers PDP loyalists are poised to get more appointments from the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government.
This is said to be one of the outcomes of the deft and unorthodox political realignment being facilitated by former Rivers State Governor and now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesome Wike.
