The Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken action against police misconduct, announcing the dismissal of 18 senior police officers and the demotion of 19 others during its first Plenary Meeting in Abuja.
PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani revealed the disciplinary measures in a statement on Friday.
“The Commission approved the dismissal of Eighteen (18) senior Police Officers which comprised ten Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents and one Superintendent,” he stated.
The breakdown of disciplinary actions includes the reduction in ranks of 19 senior police officers across various ranks, including one Assistant Commissioner of Police and thirteen Assistant Superintendents.
Additionally, two Assistant Inspectors General of Police received specific punishments: one received a reprimand for refusing to carry out lawful instructions, while another received a warning letter for negligence.
Commission Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu emphasized the organization’s commitment to maintaining professional standards.
“The Commission will henceforth consider Police Disciplinary matters with dispatch,” he warned, “to free Police Officers who are not found wanting to continue with their career progression and those found culpable to serve their punishments.”
Argungu further cautioned that the PSC will not tolerate police involvement in civil matters such as land disputes, marital issues, and rent-related conflicts.
“Courts should be allowed to do their duties while the Police should pay more attention to criminal matters and threats to life,” he emphasized.
The plenary meeting, also considered 23 appeals and petitions along with 13 court judgments.
