The Police Command in Nasarawa has issued a stern warning to political parties and their supporters, urging them to refrain from any form of violence leading up to the Court of Appeal judgment on the state’s gubernatorial election.
Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Shettima Muhammad, communicated the message during a press conference held in Lafia on Monday. Emphasizing the collaboration between the police and other security agencies, DCP Muhammad assured that security measures have been intensified throughout the state to prevent any disruption of law and order before and after the court’s verdict. “Security personnel have been adequately deployed to strategic locations in the state to maintain peace,” he stated.
The acting Commissioner of Police urged leaders of all political parties to exercise restraint and discourage their supporters from making inflammatory statements that could escalate political tensions. He stressed the importance of moderate celebrations that respect the fundamental rights of the general public. DCP Muhammad unequivocally warned that anyone or group attempting to disturb the peace and incite lawlessness will face the full force of the law.
Last week, the Appeal Court in Abuja reserved judgment on an appeal filed by Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The appeal challenges the ruling of the tribunal which previously nullified the governor’s election. With the impending judgment amplifying tension and anticipation, the police’s proactive approach and firm warning aim to forestall any potential disturbance of peace before and after the judgment. Extensive deployments of security personnel have been strategically positioned across key locations in the state.

“I call on all political party leaders to exercise their influence and encourage their supporters to avoid making inflammatory statements that could escalate political tensions or engage in activities that may be perceived as preparations for violent demonstrations,” stated DCP Muhammad.
He further emphasized the importance of celebrating with moderation while respecting the fundamental rights of the general public. The acting Commissioner warned that any individual or group attempting to disrupt peace and incite lawlessness would face the full force of the law.
With the proactive stance of the police and security agencies, coupled with the admonition for peaceful conduct, it is hoped that the people of Nasarawa State will maintain calm and patiently await the court’s decision on the governorship election.
