A tragic road accident in Ore, Ondo State has claimed the lives of three police officers and a female suspect when a speeding trailer collided with their police van on Thursday.
The fatal crash occurred in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area, when a trailer driver lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median, and crashed into a police van carrying four officers and a suspect from the Monitoring Unit of the Ondo State Police Command.
Samuel Ibitoye, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, confirmed that excessive speed by the trailer driver caused the accident.
The police team had reportedly traveled from Akure to Ore to make an arrest when the incident occurred.
“The surviving officer, who sustained serious injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” eyewitnesses reported at the scene.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, described the incident as “unfortunate” and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers.
She confirmed that the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
