The Nasarawa State Police Command has reported a deadly clash between farmers and herders in Dogon Duste community, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries.
Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, detailed the incident during a press briefing in Lafia on Thursday. According to his account, the violence erupted on Monday afternoon around 4:30 pm in the community situated between Nasarawa and Toto Local Government Areas.
“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) received a report that there was a clash between farmers and herders on Monday, at about 4:30 pm,” Nadada explained.
“On reaching there, it was discovered that two people were killed in the farm while four others injured were rushed to a Primary Healthcare for treatment.”
During subsequent search operations, law enforcement discovered an additional body in the surrounding bush, bringing the death toll to three.
The police commissioner assured that peace has been restored to the affected area, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
“We have already developed an action plan that revolves around collaborative policing after a careful study of the trend of the crime pattern in the state,” Nadada stated, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining security.
The incident adds to a history of farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, where agricultural communities and pastoral herders often compete for limited land and water resources.
These tensions have historically led to periodic outbreaks of violence, challenging local security forces and community leaders.
Commissioner Nadada highlighted the command’s progress in addressing security challenges across the state, attributing successes to strong community partnerships and government support.
“The state is adjudged to be one of the most peaceful in the country because of the collaborative strategy with the communities, and the support from the state government,” he noted.
The police leadership has called for continued public cooperation with security agencies, stressing that protecting lives and property requires collective effort.
