Nigeria’s Super Eagles maintained their unbeaten run in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as Victor Osimhen’s late header salvaged a 1-1 draw against Benin in Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday night.
The match saw Coach Augustine Eguavoen deploy a 3-4-2-1 formation, giving Auxerre defender Gabriel Osho his first start. The attacking lineup featured Osimhen as the spearhead, supported by Ademola Lookman, while Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Kelechi Iheanacho were tasked with rotating the number 10 position.
Despite dominating early possession, Nigeria’s first clear chance came in the ninth minute when Alex Iwobi’s improvised backheel attempt was blocked.
The game took an unexpected turn in the 16th minute when Benin’s Mohamed Tijani capitalized on defensive disorganization following a corner kick, heading the ball through Stanley Nwabali’s legs while Nigeria was temporarily down to 10 men due to Osimhen receiving treatment.
“The Eagles had the bulk of possession and should have taken the lead in the ninth minute, but Iwobi’s improvised finish from a back heel was blocked,” noted match observers.
The first half saw several notable moments, including Junior Olaitan testing Nwabali and Ola Aina making a crucial defensive intervention.
Ademola Lookman had a goal ruled out for offside in the 25th minute, though replays suggested otherwise.
Osimhen missed a golden opportunity before halftime, heading wide from Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross.
Eguavoen made tactical adjustments at the start of the second half, introducing Raphael Onyedika and Moses Simon for Osho and Iheanacho.
Benin nearly doubled their lead through Hassane Imourane, who failed to convert a clear opportunity when facing only Nwabali.
The breakthrough finally came in the 81st minute when Osimhen, demonstrating his aerial prowess, rose above two defenders to head home the equalizer, securing Nigeria’s position as Group D winners.
The draw ensures Nigeria will be seeded in the AFCON draws, with their final qualifying match scheduled against Rwanda on Monday, while Libya hosts Benin in the group’s other fixture.
