In a remarkable achievement, Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has secured a nomination for the prestigious 2023 Ballon d’Or award. Osimhen’s nomination marks a historic moment, as he joins the exclusive ranks of Nigerian players who have achieved this recognition.
During the previous season, the Napoli striker showcased extraordinary form, playing a pivotal role in securing the Italian side’s first Scudetto in 33 years.
The nomination for this coveted accolade was officially confirmed by the award’s organizers, French Football, on Wednesday night. Osimhen’s outstanding performance included scoring 25 goals in the league, surpassing notable contenders such as Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao to clinch the title of Best Striker in Serie A.
His contributions were not limited to domestic success; Osimhen played a crucial role in Napoli’s journey to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and was instrumental in helping the Super Eagles secure a spot in the postponed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This achievement solidifies Osimhen’s position as the first African to top the Serie A scorers’ chart, breaking George Weah’s record for the most goals scored by an African in the Italian league.
In another impressive development, Osimhen’s compatriot Asisat Oshoala has also been named among the nominees for the women’s category of the Ballon d’Or award.
This marks Oshoala’s second consecutive nomination, a remarkable feat for the Barcelona Femeni star who made history last year as the first African woman to be included in the prestigious list.
The former Arsenal player’s exceptional year included winning the Primera Division title, the Supercopa de Espana Femenina, and the Champions League. With 21 goals in the domestic league, she emerged as the joint-top scorer in Spain.
