The Presidency has officially declared that Rotimi Akeredolu, the Governor of Ondo State, continues to hold his position amidst the prolonged crisis between factions loyal to him and his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The clarification was provided through a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Saturday. The announcement came in response to speculations suggesting that President Bola Tinubu might have instructed state lawmakers to invoke the doctrine of necessity and appoint Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor.
Reports had indicated that the Deputy Governor, along with lawmakers and other stakeholders involved, chose to embrace peace and commit to maintaining the existing status quo. Extensive deliberations were held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Tinubu engaged with state officials and members of the All Progressives Congress until late on Friday night.
The Presidency, through its statement, unequivocally affirmed that Governor Akeredolu continues in his role as the Chief Executive of the state. It highlighted President Tinubu’s direct involvement in the negotiations, noting the extensive discussions that took place at the State House in Abuja. The President’s advice to all parties was to set aside their differences and pursue peace, which resulted in collective commitments to this effect.
Consequently, Governor Akeredolu retains his position, supported by Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa, while the State Executive Council members continue their respective responsibilities. The leadership of the State House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State remains unaltered, thereby preserving the stability of the political landscape.
The resolution of the long-standing crisis offers a glimpse of stability and a renewed focus on governance for the state of Ondo.
