As Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State continue to adjust to the reality of life outside their ancestral homes, the speedy dispatch of food items and relief materials to the IDP camp by the Delta State Government, has received commendations. This week, the State Government delivered food items to the camp. The package includes, 140 25kg bags of garri and 100 bags of 25kg rice. The gesture brought smiles and excitement to the IDPs, who expressed their gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The men, women and young people in the camp commended the Delta State helmsman for always thinking about the plight of the Okuama IDPs and how to ameliorate it. Â Also within the week, the member representing Ughelli South, North and Udu Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Francis Waive, made donations to the camp. The items, which were handed over to the Chairman of the IDP Camp Committee, Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, includes; 40 mattresses, bags of rice, 40 bags of beans, 40 bags of garri and 40 pieces of blankets. The lawmaker said the donation was a way of demonstrating empathy with the IDPs.
Responding, the Ewu IDP Camp Committee Chairman, Abraham Ogbodo thanked the Governor and the lawmaker for the gesture. He stressed that humanity was the major focus of the intervention, especially as humanitarian crisis, knows no political, ethnic or sectarian divide. He therefore called on other philanthropic minded individuals, including international charities to support and show solidarity to the Okuama IDPs. It will be recalled that it has been four months since the crisis, which led to the displacement of residents of Okuama from their ancestral homes. Although there can truly be no place like home, the efforts of the IDP Camp Committee led by Chairman, Abraham Ogbodo, is making the harsh reality of displacement less difficult for the IDPs.
