Nigerian music continues to make waves globally as rapper Odumodublvck and Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy receive nominations for the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, announced Thursday.
Tochukwu Gbubemi Ajogwu, aka Odumodublvck, is nominated for ‘Best International Flow,’ a milestone for the 30-year-old artist who rose to mainstream success in 2023.
Odumodublvck is the first Nigerian artist to be nominated in this category.
The ‘Best International Flow’ category will see Odumodublvck competing against rappers from France, Brazil, the UK, and South Africa.
If victorious, he would become the first Nigerian rapper to win a BET Hip Hop award, further cementing Nigeria’s place in the global hip-hop landscape.
Meanwhile, Burna Boy, already a recognized name in the international music scene, has secured a nomination for ‘Best Live Performance’.
The Afrobeats star will face stiff competition from a star-studded lineup including Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, and GloRilla.
“Since he gained his mainstream success in 2023, Odumodublvck has soared to commercial status becoming one of the biggest hip-hop stars in Africa,” a statement from the organizers noted, highlighting the rapper’s rapid rise to prominence.
The 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards promises to be a thrilling event, with American rapper Megan Thee Stallion leading the pack with an impressive 12 nominations. Following closely behind is Kendrick Lamar with 11 nominations, underscoring the fierce competition in this year’s awards.
