In a press conference held on 18th September 2023, the leadership of the OAU Students’ Union called upon the university administration to promptly roll back the recently introduced fee hikes.
The students expressed concern about the declining state of school infrastructure, inadequate teaching materials, and outdated curriculums, all contributing to a compromised educational experience for the students.
The escalating school fees further exacerbates the situation, burdening families and hindering students from less privileged backgrounds, perpetuating inequality and impeding social mobility.
The students through the press conference presented a set of demands to the university management part of which includes that he management should make it a duty to reverse the increment in school fees and a warning to financial institutions, remita, and other platforms to ignore and suspend any payment from OAU pending the time the Union will write to them; otherwise, their branches in Ife and OAU campus will be shut down.
Furthermore, the students urged the federal government and relevant authorities to enhance budget allocations for education, enabling well-equipped schools and quality education. They emphasized the need to implement policies that will eliminate barriers to education, such as arbitrary fee hikes, and investing in staff training and professional development to enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning.
The union leadership warned that if their demands are not respected, they will make the University ungovernable for the vice chancellor and the management.
