Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has taken a significant leap forward in revolutionizing science and technology education in Nigeria, courtesy of a substantial investment from Moniepoint.
The Mechanical Engineering Department has unveiled the cutting-edge Tosin Eniolorunda Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) laboratory.
According to a statement forwarded to The Explainer, the gesture aims to make subjects such as prototyping, design, and engineering more accessible, participatory, and enjoyable for students.
The Explainer learned, this development aligns with Moniepoint’s corporate social responsibility ethos, designed to bolster Nigeria’s foundation in science and technology.
“This newly revamped lab represents more than just an upgrade; it stands as part of a personal commitment to foster a generation of engineers and innovators,” said Tosin Eniolorunda, co-founder of Moniepoint and OAU alumnus. “It’s a catalyst for innovation for the next generation of engineers and technologists who will drive Nigeria’s economic growth and advancement.”
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Bamire expressed gratitude to Moniepoint and Eniolorunda. “We are really very grateful for this laboratory, considering we are almost phasing out some of these things due to paucity of funds. This has to do with the yearnings which will also improve the livelihoods of our people, especially students. So when we have an organization that has come in to meet our needs, we can only say thank you.”
The laboratory aims to enhance collaboration between academia and industry. “This laboratory will help improve and enhance a lot of things within the University for students and staff and also drive collaboration between the academia and industry,” Professor Bamire added.
The laboratory features cutting-edge facilities, including high-performance computers, electronic boards, laboratory furniture, sustainable power solutions, and advanced cooling systems.
Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Prof. Lasisi Umoru, noted that the facility will serve as a model for STEM education across Nigeria, increasing research capabilities and graduates’ employability in the global job market.

The commissioning ceremony drew dignitaries from within and outside the university, including top officials and industry leaders.
This partnership is expected to drive Nigeria’s socio-economic development through STEM education, addressing the need for more students to pursue STEM-related careers. With over 60% of Africa’s population under 25, investment in STEM education is crucial for the continent’s growth.
