The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called for restraint and caution among Islamic scholars and stakeholders amid the ongoing traditional leadership crisis in Kano State.
According to a statement by the Council on Wednesday issued by Professor Salihu Shehu, on behalf of the Secretatry-General, made available to the Explainer, stated, “At this trying period for the Ummah, we call on Islamic scholars, who are custodians of Islamic learning, values, and guidance, to exercise caution and refrain from making statements that can further exacerbate tension and polarise the Ummah.”
The NSCIA urged Ulama within and outside the state to “prayerfully allow the current traditional leadership conflict in Kano to be handled and resolved by the political, judicial, and customary authorities.”
The Council also appealed to Kano’s political, traditional, and judicial authorities to resolve the issue “with the fear of Allah, fairness, and justice.”
This development comes after a Kano State High Court judge issued an interim injunction restraining the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four other dethroned Emirs from parading themselves as traditional rulers.
Justice Amina Aliyu granted the order upon hearing an ex-parte application by counsel to the applicants, Barrister Ibrahim Wangida, on Monday.
The NSCIA called on the people of Kano to “sincerely call on Allah, remain calm, and avoid taking laws into their hands.” The Council prayed for sustainable peace in Nigeria, saying, “May Allah grant us sustainable peace in our dear Country, Nigeria.”
