The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a warning of a potential nationwide strike if the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) detains its president, Joe Ajaero.
This threat comes in response to a police summons issued to Ajaero for questioning over serious allegations on Monday.
Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, the deputy president of the NLC, announced the union’s stance following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on Tuesday.
The gathering at the NLC headquarters in Abuja saw unionists demonstrating solidarity through protest songs.
“We will go on strike if police detain Ajaero,” Adeyanju declared, putting NLC members and affiliates on high alert.

The Explainer reported that the police summons, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, ordered Ajaero to appear for questioning by 10:00 am on Tuesday.
The NLC president faces allegations of terrorism financing, treasonable felony, and cybercrime.
The letter warned that failure to comply could result in the issuance of an arrest warrant.
