The Northeast Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has identified a significant factor contributing to insecurity and hindering development in the Northeast region of Nigeria: poor road networks. During their 9th meeting held in Yola, Adamawa State, the NEGF issued an 11-point communique, shedding light on the pressing issue.
Led by the Forum’s Chairman and Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, the communique expressed dismay over the region’s inadequate infrastructure. Of particular concern was the neglect of federal roads within and between the states in the Northeast. The Forum called upon the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritize the execution of road contracts that have been awarded in the region.
The poor rail system in the area was also highlighted as an issue of great concern. The Forum recognized that the repairs on the old gauge rail lines were not a sustainable solution and emphasized the need for the Northeast to be included in the Nigerian National Railway Transport Plan, which utilizes modern gauge rail technology. Additionally, the Forum pressed for inclusion in the National Road Plan to address the region’s noticeable absence.
In light of these challenges, the NEGF has taken a proactive stance, addressing the road network and infrastructure deficiencies that hamper progress in the Northeast. The commitment to finding sustainable solutions for transportation and connectivity is pivotal in fostering economic growth and improving security throughout the region.
To further their collaborative efforts, the Forum has scheduled its 10th Meeting to be held in Bauchi between February 23 and March 26, 2024. This upcoming gathering will provide an opportunity for the governors to discuss and strategize on ways to overcome the challenges facing the region, with a specific focus on improving the road network and infrastructure.
By acknowledging and addressing the issues of poor road networks and inadequate infrastructure, the Northeast Governors’ Forum demonstrates their commitment to the development and security of the region.
