Nigerians are seeking cheaper alternatives in response to the recent hike in DSTV/GOTV prices. It will be recalled that Multichoice, the leading satellite television service provider in Sub-Saharan Africa, has announced a price increase for its DSTV and GOtv packages. The new prices, which will take effect from May 1, 2024 have added to the current cost of living crisis faced by citizens. An X-user @ThreeLeftThumb expressed frustration about the hike. He said: “I have a theory that the more that people leave DSTV to fully subscribe to streaming services, the more Multichoice has to spread the cost amongst fewer members by raising prices.”
Another X-user declared: “I’ve no business with DSTV anymore! Absolutely Rubbish…If I need to watch sport Bingesport.com action movie Netflix or if you can’t afford it rather link to your phone and enjoy your own comfort.”
It will be recalled that in a statement on Wednesday, titled ‘Price Adjustment on DStv and GOtv Packages’, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, explained that the increase was necessitated by the rise in the cost of business operations.

He said: “We understand the impact this change may have on you – our valued customer, but the rise in the cost of business operations has led us to make this difficult decision,” said Ugbe.
The Premium package on DSTV, previously priced at N29,500, will now cost N37,000. Similarly, the Compact Plus package, which was available for N19,800, has been increased to N25,000.
