The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed eight new cases of Mpox, bringing the total to 67 confirmed cases across 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
These new cases were identified in Gombe, Plateau, and Akwa Ibom states.
NCDC Director-General Jide Idris, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, revealed that out of 1,031 suspected cases from 35 states and the FCT, 67 have been confirmed positive.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and implementing measures to contain the spread of Mpox,” Idris stated.
The briefing also addressed the ongoing cholera outbreak.
The NCDC reported 141 suspected cholera cases and one death, with a case fatality rate of 0.7%.
These cases were recorded in Katsina, Lagos, Kano, Jigawa, and Adamawa states.
“To date, we have recorded 216 deaths from a total of 7,663 suspected cholera cases nationwide,” Idris informed reporters.
Despite noting a decline in cholera cases, the NCDC chief warned of potential increases in the coming weeks.
“Recent flooding in various parts of the country may lead to more outbreaks,” he cautioned.
Idris emphasized the importance of public awareness and hygiene practices in combating both Mpox and cholera.
“We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility,” he said.
The NCDC continues to work closely with state health departments to monitor and respond to these public health challenges.”
