The Minister for Youth, Dr. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, has called for enhanced stakeholders’ support to bolster the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Recognizing the laudable achievements of the scheme in youth empowerment, national unity and integration, rural development, and educational improvement, the Minister emphasized the need to strengthen and consolidate its impact.
During a courtesy visit to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, the Minister expressed her commitment to collaborating with the NYSC Management to achieve the objectives of the Scheme. Acknowledging the significance of the NYSC in the current state of the country, Bio-Ibrahim affirmed her strong advocacy for the NYSC, emphasizing the importance of sustaining its crucial role in shaping the future of Nigerian youth.
“In these times, the NYSC is more crucial than ever. It is my hope that the Scheme continues to thrive, and we will work together with you for the betterment of Nigerian youth,” stated Bio-Ibrahim.
Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director General of the NYSC, commended the Minister on her appointment and highlighted the immense contributions of the Scheme to national unity and socio-economic development. General Ahmed emphasized the NYSC’s responsiveness to the evolving needs of the nation, positioning it as a household name in Nigeria.
To enhance the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development program, the Director General highlighted collaborations with institutions and organizations such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, Access Bank, Unity Bank, Gombe State University, Nasarawa State University, and the NYSC Foundation. These partnerships have provided financial empowerment and technical support to Corps Members, equipping them with start-up capital to establish businesses aligned with the skills acquired during their service.
Despite its notable successes, the NYSC faces challenges that need urgent attention. Some of the key challenges mentioned by General Ahmed include inadequate infrastructure at certain Orientation Camps, limited Corps Lodges, and insufficient vehicles for the inspection of Corps Members.
The Minister’s visit signifies the government’s commitment to nurturing and expanding the NYSC to meet the evolving needs of Nigerian youth. By advocating for increased support, the Minister aims to ensure that the NYSC retains its relevance and remains a powerful platform for youth empowerment, national integration, and economic development.
