Nigerian music icon, actress, and activist Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72,

Onwenu, known as the “Queen of Songs,” reportedly collapsed after a performance at a private event on Tuesday and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she later died.
President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences in a statement released by his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale. The President praised Onwenu’s artistic legacy, particularly highlighting her 1990s hit “One Love” and her collaboration with King Sunny Ade on the family planning awareness song “Wait for Me.”
“President Tinubu celebrates the life of the versatile and highly gifted artiste who applied herself to the whole gamut of artistic enterprise and expression, bringing joy and laughter to many,” the statement read.
Tinubu added, “Onwenu lives on in her immortal masterpieces.”
Former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani took to social media platform X to pay tribute, writing, “Onyeka, the nation has lost a timeless legend and a great artist who sang from the heart, spreading love and peace through music. Your melodies will forever resonate in our souls. Rest in peace.”
Ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri shared his personal connection to the late singer, stating, “I am heartbroken at the news of the death of veteran singer, broadcaster, and actress Onyeka Onwenu, at 72. I knew her, and we bonded over my love for her music, which added value to my early years.”
Onwenu’s career spanned over four decades, beginning with her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. She went on to release numerous albums and singles, earning acclaim for her powerful voice and socially conscious lyrics. The multi-talented artist also made her mark in Nollywood, starring in several films and receiving multiple awards for her contributions to both music and cinema.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu was recognized as a passionate activist, advocating for various human rights causes throughout her career.
