In an effort to alleviate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies, the Kano State Government has commenced the distribution of food items to over 4,400 individuals with special needs in the state. The initiative, which aims to support vulnerable groups, was launched by Governor Abba Yusuf at the KASCO office in Kano on Monday.
Represented by his deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, Governor Yusuf expressed the high regard the government holds for those with special needs and emphasized the additional benefits that will be provided to them. The distribution of palliatives will cover 100 persons with special needs from each of the 44 local government areas in the state, benefiting individuals with visual and hearing impairments, spinal cord problems, leprosy, physical disabilities, and albinism.
The governor announced that each beneficiary will receive a 10kg bag of rice and millet across the local government areas. This second phase of palliative distribution follows the first phase, which catered to the general public through the provision of 400 bags of rice and 400 bags of maize in every ward of the state.
Governor Yusuf also highlighted the inclusion of widows and orphans of military and paramilitary personnel in the palliative distribution exercise. This gesture serves as a tribute to the sacrifices made by these families.
Addressing the gathering, Abdullahi Bichi, the chairman of the State Compliance Committee on Distribution of Palliatives and Secretary to the State Government, emphasized the need for representatives of the beneficiaries to adhere to the rules. He stated that each beneficiary should receive one bag of maize and one bag of rice, ensuring fairness and equality in the distribution process.
Leaders of the beneficiary groups conveyed their gratitude to the state government for recognizing their circumstances and extending this special initiative to them. They expressed their appreciation for the gesture, which will greatly assist them during this challenging period.
In addition to the distribution of palliatives to persons with special needs, the government also commenced the distribution of food items to orphans and widows of military and paramilitary personnel, further demonstrating its commitment to supporting marginalized communities in Kano State.
