In a significant development, a Kano State High Court judge has issued an interim injunction restraining the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four other dethroned Emirs from parading themselves as traditional rulers. Justice Amina Aliyu granted the order upon hearing an ex-parte application by counsel to the applicants, Barrister Ibrahim Wangida, on Monday.
The court order states, “That an order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Defendants either by themselves, servants, privies, and or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other person from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the Applicants.”

Furthermore, the order mandates the Commissioner of Police in Kano State to “immediately take the palace of the Emir of Kano situate being and lying at State Road Kano and evict the 1st Defendant/Respondent from the said palace pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated 24 May, 2024.”
Justice Aliyu emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Kano, stating, “That an order of this Hon. Court is hereby granted restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Defendants from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye in the interest of peace in Kano pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”
The applicants in the suit include the Kano Attorney General, the Speaker of the Kano House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly itself. The respondents, on the other hand, are Aminu Ado Bayero, Nasiru Ado Bayero, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II, Alhaji Kabir Muhammad Inuwa, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Gaya, the Inspector General of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Security and Civil Corps, and the Nigerian Army.

Justice Aliyu has scheduled the hearing of the motion on notice for June 11, 2024, where further arguments and evidence will be presented by both parties.
The interim injunction comes amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the dethronement of the Emirs and the subsequent appointment of new traditional rulers. As the legal proceedings continue, the court’s order aims to maintain peace and stability in the region until a final determination is made.
