Controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was released from Kirikiri Correctional Centre on Monday morning after serving a six-month sentence for Naira abuse.
The social media personality’s release was eagerly anticipated by fans, with a video of his exit from prison quickly going viral.
Surprisingly, Bobrisky emerged with a noticeably different appearance. Fans observed that he looked fresher and lighter in complexion, with fuller cheeks than expected after his time in prison.
He was greeted by friends, including actress Moyo Lawal and filmmaker Eniola Ajao, who accompanied him in a Mercedes-Benz G-class.
Upon his release, Bobrisky warned against the practice of spraying money, stating, “Please, don’t spray money, or you’ll end up in jail. I’m focusing on my friends, those who were there for me, and my fans. We need to party.”
Reflecting on his prison experience, Bobrisky added, “It’s not (my experience at prison) okay, but you must abide by the rules. It’s not just criminal activities like killing that can send someone to prison, but also small offences.”
Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, declined to comment further, saying, “He has served his punishment; I am not permitted to speak on his behalf at this time.”
Rotimi Oladokun, spokesperson for the Lagos Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), could not confirm whether Bobrisky would need to report back to the Correctional Centre, stating, “If an inmate is released and there are no conditions or terms attached to the release, the inmate is not required to report back to the Correctional Centre.”
The Explainer reports that Bobrisky was sentenced in April by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Federal High Court for abusing the Naira.
The judge stated that the sentence was intended to serve as a deterrent to others. Although Bobrisky filed an appeal challenging the sentence, he ultimately served the full six-month term.
The case has drawn comparisons to that of actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who was also convicted for spraying and trampling on new Naira notes at a Lagos wedding.
